'Sent obscene videos on WhatsApp': Kolkata doctor harassed by app cyclist for canceling ride

KOLKATA: A female junior doctor has accused an app-based cyclist of harassing her and sending sexually explicit content on her mobile phone after she canceled her ride. The former CNMCH student, who is now a first-year postgraduate intern at a private hospital in Bypass, lodged a complaint with the police and the cops arrested the accused cyclist. The incident was reported from Purba Jadavpur on Thursday.
“We launched an investigation upon his complaint and arrested the suspect. app cyclist Friday morning. He has been identified as Raju Das (41), a resident of Mukundapur,” said DC (East) Arish Bilal. According to the complaint, the woman booked the bike on Thursday but later canceled it when an emergency arose.
The cyclist then reportedly called him 17 times and continued to ask why he had canceled the ride, even though he had traveled several kilometers and almost reached his destination. He didn’t stop there. It was alleged that the defendant started sending obscene videos via WhatsApp. When the doctor objected, he abused her.
The doctor later lodged a complaint with East Jadavpur PS and also reported the matter to the cyber cell. The police tracked down the booking, got help from the ride-hailing company, and summoned the defendant. The cops later arrested him after questioning him and found prima facie evidence corroborating the allegations.
“The driver said he would be late. I was in a hurry so I canceled it. “When I got in the car to go to my destination, he started calling me and harassing me,” the doctor alleged.
“We will approach the court to record the victim’s statement before the judge,” said a police officer, adding that they would also investigate why he canceled the trip. The app bike company said it would cooperate with police. “We have a no-tolerance policy towards passenger harassment,” said a spokesman for one of the largest app taxi and bike aggregators in the city.
