SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. (Gray News) – A 1-year-old child was found dead in a car outside a Florida middle school after a family member forgot to drop them off at day care, authorities said.

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call of a dead baby in a car in front of South Sumter Middle School on Friday around 4:18 p.m. according to a press release.

The investigation revealed that the 1-year-old child was left in the car unintentionally by a family member. Authorities said that the child was supposed to be left at the nursery, but the relative forgot about the child and went to school.

The 1-year-old child was found dead in the car later the same day.

“This is a tragic situation and our hearts go out to the child’s family,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a press release.

Officials say the investigation continues in coordination with the coroner’s office and the state attorney’s office.
