Man who kidnapped and raped little girl in Bengal arrested

Kolkata, November 3 (IANS): A man has been arrested in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district on charges of kidnapping and raping a minor girl.

The defendant was arrested on Saturday night.

The accused’s family was said to have connections with the Trinamool Congress.

This is the third rape incident involving underage victims reported from the state in the last 24 hours; The previous two took place at Kumargram in Alipurduar district and Domkal in Murshidabad district.

According to the complaint submitted to the police by the victim’s parents, she was kidnapped while returning from class on Friday evening, taken to a secluded place and then raped by the defendant.

After returning home, his family found him in shock, although he did not say anything to anyone. He attempted suicide on Saturday evening but was prevented by his family.

He later told the whole story and on the same night the parents filed a police complaint against the accused. Cops later arrested him late Saturday night. A local police official said the man would appear in district court only on Sunday afternoon and that the prosecutor would seek his detention.

It was learned that the accused young people had frequently complained about making fun of young girls before. A year ago, locals were outraged after the same victim complained that the accused had publicly mocked her.

However, the victim’s father said that the accused teenager somehow avoided the police complaint by making a public apology.

Local BJP legislator from Gaighata Subrata Thakur accused the family members of the arrested youths and local Trinamool Congress activists of threatening the victim’s family members since the date of filing of the complaint.

However, local Trinamool Congress leader Prasenjit Ghosh denied the accusations and said he would take action according to the law in such cases.

West Bengal has been in the news for the last three months due to repeated reports of rape and murder.

The most talked about tragedy was the gruesome rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata in the hospital premises in August.
