Trick-or-treating on Halloween, Amy Schmitt’s son leaves candy to hospitalized child, video shows in Woodhaven, Michigan

WOODHAVEN, Michigan — A group of neighborhood kids in Woodhaven went out for a regular night of trick-or-treating on Halloween, but instead of taking all the treats home for themselves, they stopped to share them with a friend they said needed them more.

Amy Schmitt and her son love dressing up and handing out candy on Halloween, but after a medical emergency sent her to the hospital, a few neighborhood kids knew exactly how to cheer her up.

“It’s overwhelming how much love we have… and I don’t know half of these people,” Amy said.

Amy said she has been in the hospital with her son since Tuesday.

But since he and his son like to dress up and hand out candy on Halloween, he didn’t want the kids in the neighborhood to be disappointed.

“I left a note saying my son was in the hospital and we didn’t have sugar. I’m sorry,” he said.

He says he started receiving notifications that motion was detected from the doorbell camera.

“And tons of kids are throwing out baskets of candy,” Amy said.

This was the most heartwarming surprise for Amy and her son Jacob.

One of the children who gave her candy was 6-year-old Mia.

“When he finished his first lap he wanted to sit down, so we were sitting at home and I said ‘dad can we go out again?’ “I said, ‘Of course we can go out again.'” Mia’s father, James Sayen, said, “I don’t want this candy, I want to leave it here.”

James says his daughter made this decision entirely on her own; He says that this decision even affected him.

“He felt bad and didn’t want anyone to eat candy on Halloween,” James said.

Amy says the parents of these children deserve some credit for raising such kind young people.

“It’s truly amazing how these parents raise these kids,” Amy said. “It’s a remarkable thing to do this without your parents.”

Amy says she and Jacob couldn’t be more grateful for their kind neighbors.

“It was very thoughtful of someone to go that extra mile,” he said.
