Odisha: Under-trial convict, whose legs were chained, escaped from hotel in Gajpati

An under-trial convict escaped from police custody on Sunday after a hearing in the local court while he was staying in a hotel with cops in Odisha’s Gajapati district.

The accused, identified as Jual Sabar, was arrested by the railway police from Nagpur, Maharashtra, in a case related to narcotic drug trafficking. During the investigation, police also found that Sabar was involved in a rape case.

He was brought to Gajapati for hearing in the local court on Saturday, November 2. After the court proceedings, Sabar and the police team that brought him from Nagpur to Gajpati checked into a hotel.

During his stay, Sabar escaped from police custody even though his legs were chained by the officers to restrict his movement. The police team was reportedly sleeping in another room when Sabar escaped.

In the footage captured on the hotel’s security cameras, Sabar is seen slowly walking outside the hotel with his legs tied with chains.

Speaking on the issue, a senior official from Gajpati Police said that teams have been formed to catch Sabar. Police officials in Nagpur were also informed about the incident.

“Police are looking for Sabar. A fresh case has been registered against him under section 226 for escaping from police custody,” said a senior official of Gajpati Police.
