Abdi Nageeye and Sheila Chepkirui use closing strokes to claim first major marathon win at New York City Marathon

Abdi Nageeye bounces back from Olympic disappointment

The men’s marathon was held in Paris 2024 under challenging conditions where both heat and humidity affected the race. This forced Nageeye off course, and the result stuck with him until Sunday’s race.

“This was one of my biggest disappointments ever,” Nageeye said of the Olympics. “I told myself, ‘You’ll never get this back.’ So I focused on New York every day (as motivation) thinking about Paris.”

It was Chebet and Korir who tried to break the race at Mile 16 at Queensborough Bridge, but the leading group fell seven runners behind.

As the racers rolled into Central Park for the final mile, only Nageeye and Chebet remained ahead as the Dutchman displayed his stronger kick to secure victory.

This is a monumental event for him, his first success in a marathon and he believes it can be a springboard.

“I’m still fresh,” he told reporters after the race. “I think I’m going to do a lot better in the next few years (from now on). I was saying to myself: ‘I’ve got to win one of these in the next three marathons.’ And here I won.”

Chepkirui became the sixth Kenyan woman to win the New York title since 2010. The country’s sweep of the women’s podium marks a first in New York since 1976, when U.S. women went 1-2-3.

Sara Vaughn She became the best host woman of the day, placing seventh with 2:25:56. Conner Mantz He became the first U.S. man to place sixth with a time of 2:09:00.
