Police give evidence to British prosecutors in Russell Brand investigation

A statement sent to AFP said police had received numerous reports of sexual offenses from women in London and elsewhere in the UK following an investigation by Channel 4’s Dispatches and The Sunday Times in September 2023.

The television documentary featured allegations of rape, sexual assault and emotional abuse by many women.

Brand, 49, has denied the allegations of misconduct, which are said to have occurred between 2006 and 2013.

“A file of evidence has now been forwarded to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), who will decide whether to lay charges,” the police statement said.

“As part of the investigation, a man in his 40s was questioned under caution by officers on three separate occasions,” police said, adding that these were related to a series of non-recent sexual offences.

“We have a dedicated team of officers who provide specialist support to women who come forward,” Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy said.

“We are committed to investigating sexual crimes, no matter how long ago they are alleged to have occurred,” he added.

Brand became internationally known as the ex-husband of pop star Katy Perry after he developed a career as a stand-up comedian with risky routines often involving drugs and sex.
