Charges Prepared in Kolkata Rape-Murder Case, Accused Says 'Framed'

Kolkata:

Sanjay Roy, the prime suspect in the rape-murder of a Kolkata doctor, has claimed that he is innocent and that he was framed by the government. His reiteration of his innocence came amid the framing of charges against him in a case that sent shockwaves across the country and led to mass protests by junior doctors in Bengal that had a ripple effect in many states.

Sanjay Roy is the only person accused of the August 9 rape murder. Charges were filed against Sanjoy Roy today under sections 103(2), 64, 66 of the BNS. The trial will begin on November 11. The framing of the charges will take place 87 days after the incident.

The man, a civilian volunteer with the Kolkata police, was roaming freely around the hospital and was caught on CCTV cameras entering the hospital before the rape and murder of the 31-year-old doctor took place. Investigators released CCTV screenshot showing Sanjay Roy entering the hospital an hour after midnight. The footage showed a Bluetooth headset wrapped around his neck, which police said they found at the scene.

Sanjoy Roy, who is under the supervision of the Central Bureau of Investigation, which is investigating the case, claimed that he was threatened. He told this to the media as he left the courthouse.

Although many suspected gang involvement in the case, the central agency had denied the allegation after recording over 100 statements and conducting 10 polygraph tests, including those of two of the hospital’s former chiefs, Sandip Ghosh. Roy is the sole defendant in the case.

Roy had previously taken a polygraph test and insisted it would help prove his innocence.
