Proposed Eskom tariff increase ‘will have serious impact on households’

Proposed Eskom tariff increase ‘will have serious impact on households’

“Actually, this will affect them very badly because you should know that residents doing business are suffering from load shedding, looting, floods etc,” said Ish Prahladh, president of the association.

“Now, when this comes into play, you’re going to see a lot of people losing their jobs, closing down, and a lot of people losing their jobs.”

In September, Eskom applied to South Africa’s National Energy Regulator for a 36.15% tariff increase for the 2025/26 financial year.

The agency’s multi-year request includes applications to increase tariffs by almost 12 percent in 2027 and 9 percent in fiscal 2028.

Prahladh says the increases are unfair as taxpayers are already struggling with the high cost of living.

“The economy will not recover if Eskom comes with this. Eskom needs to look at their own costs in the amount of revenue they use to pay staff who do nothing. Basically, they need to lose sight of their heads in the civil service.”
