A man was remanded in custody at Derry Magistrates’ Court charged with burglary from a parochial house and criminal damage to a church window.

Jordan Leighton (24), of Duncreggan Road, Derry, was charged with the offenses said to have occurred on November 3.

He was charged with burglary with intent to steal at St Joseph’s Parochial House, criminal damage to a church window, being equipped for burglary by wearing gloves, possession of a knife, criminal damage to a shop window and attempted burglary with intent to steal the same shop. to steal.

The court heard police were called to reports of an attempted burglary at the parochial house, where a man was detained in the basement of the building at 7.45am.

During the search, a pair of gloves, a knife and a stone believed to be used to break the glass were seized.

The court heard that at 6.56am police received a report of an attempt to break into a shop.

CCTV was reviewed and a man matching Leighton’s description was seen trying to break the window with a brick.

Defense lawyer Seamus Quigley said Leighton denied being on the property to steal but was hiding there from some people who were after him.

Deputy District Judge Liam McStay said he did not believe he was eligible for bail.

Leighton was taken into custody and will appear in court again on November 28.
