“The most likely situation here is manual strangulation with a degree of force above what we would commonly recognize in ligature strangulation (meaning hanging).”

Of the fractures to his spine, Prof Arthurs said such injuries usually result from road traffic accidents or a fall from a height, and are likely caused by “high-speed impact or polytrauma”.

He said there was no evidence that he suffered from any underlying bone abnormalities or any disease.

“In my opinion, the most likely explanation for the injuries, including location, pattern, severity, manner of healing, and some fractures, are multiple attacks of blunt force trauma administered over several weeks.”

It is estimated that many of these different fractures occurred in the weeks leading up to his death; The hyoid bone is believed to have been broken six to 12 weeks before August 8.
