Harleyville woman charged in hit-and-run that killed Berkeley County detention deputy

Harleyville woman arrested in connection with an incident hit-and-run collision That incident resulted in the death of a Berkeley County detention deputy early Monday morning, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Jessica Ann Goodwin, 30, has been charged with death following a hit-and-run crash, Trooper Nick Pye said.

The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as 26-year-old Sergeant Devon Lindsay, who was riding a motorcycle at the time of the collision. Deputies said he was working at the Hill-Finklea Detention Center and was on duty when he was shot.

Berkeley County Coroner Darnell Hartwell confirmed Sgt. Lindsay was wearing a helmet.

The collision happened just before 5 a.m. on Old Gilliard Road, authorities said. Pye said Goodwin and Lindsay were heading north when Goodwin hit Lindsay’s motorcycle.

Goodwin fled the scene following the collision but was later located.
