Golden eagles are a protected species

Body parts of a dead golden eagle were removed before being thrown into a plastic bag, police said.

The bird was found on the woodland path of the A81 near Loch Russky, north-east of Port Monteith in Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park.

Following the discovery at around 11:00 on Tuesday, July 30, an investigation was launched.

Separately, the RSPB said a red kite was killed by a banned pesticide in Sutherland, Scotland.

A police spokesman said: “Golden eagles are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and anyone with information is appealed. To contact Police Scotland.

“Inquiries are ongoing and officers are now appealing for help to find out how he got there.”

Police are also involved in the investigation into the death of the red kite.

RSPB Scotland said the bird of prey, also a protected species, was found by a dog walker at Spinningdale, near Dornoch, in April.

It was stated that the autopsy and toxicology analysis results were compatible with Carbofuran poisoning.

Pesticides have been banned for over 20 years.
