JAMESBURG – Mayor Thomas Gibbons has resigned a year after being elected.

In his resignation letter, effective as of November 8, Gibbons, 72, said that he resigned due to health problems.

“It depends on priorities,” Gibbons said. “Serving the community is very important to me, but family comes first. I want to spend more time with my family, especially my grandchildren.”

Gibbons also wrote: “I have a strong calling to devote more of my time to my family and my faith, both of which have been invaluable sources of strength and purpose throughout my life. I look forward to focusing on these essential aspects as I transition.” Far from public service.”

He said he left the post “with a mixture of gratitude and reflection.”

He said the district is “really in good hands right now” and is “moving in the right direction financially.”

Republican Gibbons, Long-deposed former Mayor Marlene LowandeDemocrat in the November 2023 general election.

Gibbons won easily by a margin of 56% to 44%.

On November 11 – Veterans Day, a federal and state holiday – a special Borough Council meeting will be held at 7:00 pm at Borough Hall to discuss the process of filling the vacancy for the remainder of the term.

Mayor Thomas Emens said the legal review by County Attorney Fredrick C. Raffetto of the procedure to fill the vacancy has been completed and the County Council is awaiting guidance on next steps.

Emens will serve as acting mayor until his successor is appointed.

In addition to mayor, Gibbons served one term as a county councilman. He was a former chairman of the Jamesburg Library Board of Trustees. He serves as assistant director of the Fernwood Cemetery Association, St. He is a religious education teacher at St. James the Less Church and is a member of the Jamesburg Historical Society, Knights of Columbus and Jamesburg Elks.

Gibbons founded the Bicycle Recycling Project, which repairs donated bicycles. He also founded the foundation called Instruments in the Attic, which he founded in memory of his wife and provides scholarships to promising music students. He also collects used tools and donates them to schools for students whose parents cannot afford to rent them.

“Serving as mayor has been one of the greatest honors of my life, and I am incredibly grateful for the trust and support the people of Jamesburg have placed in me,” Gibbons wrote in his resignation letter.

“Throughout my time in office, I have been continually impressed by the strength and resilience of our community,” Gibbons also wrote. “Together we have overcome challenges, celebrated successes, and worked to create a Jamesburg we can all be proud of.”
