Criminal charges filed against two people for mishandling an Indian python

Panaji, 5 November: North Goa Forest Department acting in a video depicting two men capturing and misusing an Indian python (Python molurus), a protected species under Annex I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act (WPA), 1972, in Caranzalem district of Panjim, Goa Forest Department , registered a preliminary offense report (POR) after receiving notice from Persons for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) in India.

According to PETA, POR is registered under sections 9 and 51 of the 1972 WPA. This offense is non-bailable and carries a minimum imprisonment of three years which may extend to seven years and ? at least Rs 25,000.

“PETA India is grateful to Shri Jiss Varkey IFS, Deputy Conservator of Forests, North Goa Division, for quickly registering the POR and sending a clear message that animals will not be mistreated,” said Saloni Sakaria, Cruelty Response Coordinator, PETA India.

“We urge community members to never resort to violence when dealing with wildlife and instead seek the help of the forest department.” Saloni Sakaria said.
