US elections: Millions of Americans vote to decide between Trump and Harris | US News

Millions of Americans are voting in a historic election that could return Donald Trump to the White House or make Kamala Harris the first woman to become president of the United States.

The two candidates are neck-and-neck in the polls after a bitter campaign that culminated in two assassination attempts on Republican Mr. Trump as well as his shock withdrawal. President Joe Biden.

In about 100 days, Ms. Harris managed to get back on her feet and launch a fierce challenge to her opponent.

With just hours before the polls close, the election is now at a critical point and the decision could be determined by a handful of key battleground states.

How does voting work?

In addition to those lining up at voting booths on Tuesday, tens of millions of Americans also voted early today by voting by mail or in person.

To become president, the winning candidate must receive 270 or more delegate votes, and each state carries a different number of votes.

If polls predicting a close race are correct, the election will likely be settled several battleground states: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania And Wisconsin.

The first votes on Tuesday reflected the national divide. Six registered voters in New Hampshire’s tiny hamlet of Dixville Notch split their votes between the two candidates in a vote held just after midnight.
