5th person charged after NJ detective killed in home invasion: police

A fifth person has been arrested and charged in the murder of New Jersey Prosecuting Attorney Detective Sergeant Monica Mosley, who was shot and killed during a violent home invasion in October.

The Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office announced that 35-year-old Byron Thomas of Paulsboro was arrested and charged with Murder (Intentionally and/or knowingly Causing Death), a First Degree felony; Murder (Murder During Robbery) First Degree Felony; Theft as a Second Degree Felony; Unlawful possession of a weapon, a Second Degree Felony; Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, a Second Degree Felony; Not Possession of a Weapon by a Particular Person, a Second Degree Felony; Hindering Arrest for Third Degree Felony; Obstruction of Justice, a Fourth Degree Felony.

Following an extensive investigation, the Cape May County District Attorney’s Office announced last week that the following four individuals have also been charged:

  • Nyshawn Mutcherson, 29, of Vineland, was charged with Murder (Intentionally and/or knowingly Causing Death), a First Degree felony; Murder (Murder During Robbery) First Degree Felony; Theft as a Second Degree Felony; Unlawful possession of a weapon, a Second Degree Felony; Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, a Second Degree Felony; Not Possession of a Weapon by a Particular Person, a Second Degree Felony; Hindering Arrest for Third Degree Felony; Obstruction of Justice, a Fourth Degree Felony.
  • Jared Brown, 31, of Bridgeton, was charged with Murder (Intentionally and/or knowingly Causing Death), a First Degree felony; Murder (Murder During Robbery) First Degree Felony; Theft as a Second Degree Felony; Unlawful possession of a weapon, a Second Degree Felony; Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, a Second Degree Felony; Not Possession of a Weapon by a Particular Person, a Second Degree Felony; Hindering Arrest for Third Degree Felony; Obstruction of Justice is a Fourth Degree Felony.
  • Richard B. Hawkins Willis, 32, of Gloucester City, was charged with Murder (Intentionally and/or knowingly Causing Death), a crime of the First Degree; Murder (Murder During Robbery) First Degree Felony; Theft as a Second Degree Felony; Unlawful possession of a weapon, a Second Degree Felony; Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, a Second Degree Felony; Not Possession of a Weapon by a Particular Person, a Second Degree Felony; Hindering Arrest for Third Degree Felony; Obstruction of Justice, a Fourth Degree Felony.
  • Cyndia E. Pimentel, 38, of Paulsboro, was charged with Obstructing Investigation, a third-degree felony; Obstruction of Justice, a fourth-degree felony; Tampering with evidence is a fourth-degree crime.

The charges follow the tragic murder of Detective Sergeant Monica Mosley of the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office on October 15th.

“This development is a testament to the relentless efforts of the law enforcement agencies involved in this case,” said Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland. “We are committed to pursuing justice for Detective Sergeant Mosley and his family. Cooperation between all agencies is vital in bringing this case to light.”

“Law enforcement and the State of New Jersey have lost a determined and dedicated public servant, but we know that the loss of Sergeant Monica Mosley is felt most deeply by her family, loved ones, and colleagues. While nothing can bring Sergeant back, Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin “As we return Mosley to those who loved him, we hope that the focused, coordinated efforts in this case will provide them with the comfort of knowing that justice is being pursued,” he said. “I want to recognize the incredible efforts of the many other agencies involved in the investigation of his murder.”

Authorities say Detective Mosley is a ‘dedicated public servant who dedicated his life to protecting the community.’
