AGARTALA: A special court on Tuesday sentenced two brothers, who were found guilty of repeatedly raping and blackmailing a minor girl in North Tripura three years ago, to 20 years rigorous imprisonment.
The court sentenced both the brothers to a fine of Rs 25,000 under the POCSO Act. They were also sentenced to 10 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000 under IPC Section 376 for rape and one year imprisonment under IPC Section 506 for criminal intimidation.
The court announced that all sentences will be given simultaneously. Prosecutor Sudarshan Sharma said the incident came to light when the victim became pregnant and gave birth to a son. In February 2021, the victim’s minor child had gone to Prashanta Nath’s house to drink water while returning home from school.
Prashanta then lured her to his room and raped her, taking advantage of her mother’s absence. His younger brother Pappu Debnath witnessed the incident and later blackmailed the victim. She stated that both brothers raped the girl repeatedly over two years, using her fear of social stigma.
Her family did not become aware of this terrible ordeal until after she became pregnant and gave birth. A complaint was filed with the police in February 2022 and investigating officer Usha Rani Debnath quickly filed the charges within two months. The special POCSO court conducted a comprehensive hearing by examining the statements of 23 witnesses during the hearing.
The victim’s identity was not disclosed to protect her privacy in line with the Supreme Court’s directives on sexual assault-related cases.
