Kenyan-born American Huldah Momanyi made history by winning a seat in the Minnesota House of Representatives.

Momanyi became the first Kenyan-born politician to serve in the United States.

Momanyi was affiliated with the Democrat-Farmer-Labor (DFL) Party.

He won the seat in Minnesota District 38A, which includes southwestern parts of Brooklyn Park and Osseo, with 64.78 percent of the vote.

District 38A is a highly diverse district; About 66 percent of residents identify as people of color, a large portion of whom are African immigrants.

His win of the seat represents a significant milestone in the increasing representation of African immigrants in American politics.

Momanyi’s vision for the Minnesota State Senate focuses on key issues like safety, fair housing and accessible healthcare.

He seeks to advocate a pragmatic approach to policymaking that goes beyond political rhetoric.

Speaking to the media previously about the challenges she faced running for the seat, Momanyi explained that being an immigrant and a black woman made her campaign difficult.

“There’s a double-edged sword where my skills, my experience, my education, everything is examined from a who-know-whether-you-know-whether-you-qualified perspective,” he explained.

He won the Democratic primary by receiving 51.28 percent of the votes, leaving fellow candidate Wynfred Russell behind.

A mother of two, Momanyi brings a personal perspective to the challenges working families face, especially when it comes to affordable child care.

Momanyi was born in Nyamira County in 1985 to Philip and Tabitha Momanyi.

Nine years later they moved to the USA. He earned a master’s degree from Bethel University of Minnesota.
