10-year-old girl dies, neighbor injured in accident in Hailey Mandi

A 10-year-old girl was killed and a 34-year-old man was seriously injured when she was hit by a speeding truck while crossing the road in Hailey Mandi, Pataudi, police said on Tuesday. The deceased, identified as Mehak, was crossing the road with her neighbor Kapil Singh, a resident of Kakrola in Sector 87, when the accident took place.

According to investigators, 30-year-old Poonam Devi had taken her children Deepanshu and Mehak to visit their parents in Naya Gaon, Sohna, over the weekend. On Monday, Devi’s brother Manesh Kumar was returning home on his motorcycle when Devi noticed her neighbor Kapil Singh in Pataudi. She decided to join him in his car with his children for the rest of the trip.

The accident took place when Singh stopped his car near a tailor shop in Hailey Mandi around 1.30pm to pick up some clothes. While he and Mehak were crossing the road, they were hit by a speeding truck. While Mehak was trapped under the wheels of the truck and died at the scene, Singh was seriously injured.

Sandeep Kumar, public relations officer of Gurugram police, said that the truck driver and the co-driver abandoned the vehicle and fled immediately. “Locals quickly informed the police control room and arranged an ambulance to transport both the victims to the community health center in Pataudi, where doctors declared the girl dead. Singh was later shifted to a private hospital for further treatment,” Kumar added. Police said the girl suffered serious head injuries, while Singh suffered injuries from multiple parts of his body.

Police said they were working with the transportation department to track down the owner of the truck with the goal of finding and arresting the driver. An FIR was lodged at Pataudi police station under Sections 106 (causing death by negligence) and 281 (rash driving or cycling on public road) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita on the complaint of Devi’s brother-in-law Satbir Singh.
