Waukesha police chase, hit-and-run crash; Milwaukee woman charged

A 36-year-old Milwaukee woman is accused of leading police on a high-speed chase and then crashing into a vehicle before fleeing the scene. The defendant is Amber Fields and she faces the following charges:

  • Trying to run or evade an officer
  • hit and run vehicle
  • Possession of prescription/illegally obtained
  • Second degree recklessly endangering safety

According to the criminal complaint, a Waukesha police officer spotted a small white SUV traveling east on S. East Boulevard on Oct. 31. The officer believed the vehicle was speeding. He used the radar unit, which showed the SUV was traveling 42 mph in a designated 25 mph zone.

Moments later, the officer activated his lights to conduct a traffic stop on E. Sunset Drive. The vehicle did not leave and the vehicle continued towards Highway 164.

The complaint stated that when the driver of the SUV turned onto Highway 164, the officer turned on his siren and the vehicle again did not pull over. The officer reported that “the vehicle accelerated and reached speeds in excess of 90 miles per hour,” the complaint states. The officer noticed the driver of the SUV running a red light on Pearl Street, and the officer then ended the pursuit.

During the slowdown, the officer “observed the suspect vehicle striking a blue SUV” at Highway 164 and Arcadian Boulevard, the complaint said. Both vehicles came to a halt. A truck driver who witnessed the events told the officer that the woman in the white SUV was running away, and he described what the woman was wearing. A short time later, officers found the woman in the U-Haul parking lot. He was detained.

While in custody, police found “four small round white pills in the left front pocket of the defendant’s apron-style shirt,” the complaint said. When asked about the pills, he stated they were Lorazepam,” the complaint states. An officer positively identified the pills as prescription-only Lorazepam.
