Ashlyn Watkins returns to training after attack, kidnapping charges dismissed

COLUMBIA, SC (FOX Carolina) – Suspended South Carolina forward Ashlyn Watkins returns to action with South Carolina women’s basketball on Wednesday.

Watkins was charged with assault and kidnapping in August, but the charges against him were dismissed, according to online criminal records.

He was suspended from the Gamecocks team after his arrest and did not travel to the White House with the rest of the team in September for recognition of their national championship win.

Court records show Watkins’ charges were dismissed Nov. 1.

Records obtained by FOX Carolina’s sister station WIS News 10 show the first-degree assault charge was dismissed after he completed pretrial intervention, a program for first-time offenders.

Watkins’ kidnapping charge was dropped at the discretion of prosecutor April Sampson.

South Carolina Women’s Basketball released the following statement on Wednesday:

“With the legal charges dismissed, South Carolina junior forward Ashlyn Watkins has returned to team activities beginning with today’s practice.”
