USC says Ashlyn Watkins returned to practice after charges dismissed

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – The University of South Carolina women’s basketball team (USC) announced Wednesday that Ashlyn Watkins is returning to team activities after 2017. The charges against him were dismissed.

Watkins was Charged with assault and kidnapping in August and was suspended from the women’s basketball team. He also didn’t go to the White House in September, when President Biden hosted the team to honor their national championship win.

Warrants from the USC campus police department said the video captured an assault between Watkins and his teenage girlfriend.

Watkins’ assault charge was dismissed after he completed pretrial intervention for first-time offenders, and the Solicitor’s Office declined to prosecute the kidnapping charge, authorities said.

The young forward will continue to play as of Wednesday training.

WIS News 10 has also reached out to Watkins’ attorney, Rep. Todd Rutherford, for comment on the dismissal of the charges and is awaiting response.
