Teacher, nurse and driver among 14 people arrested for illegal street racing in Hong Kong

A primary school teacher, a nurse and a professional driver were among 14 people arrested for illegal street racing in Hong Kong as police stepped up enforcement efforts ahead of the annual Macau Grand Prix.

The operation spanned the last two months and resulted in the seizure of 14 vehicles so police could check for possible illegal modifications.

Police said some vehicles were recorded repeatedly crossing double white lines on bends on Route Twisk while traveling at 135 km/h (84mph) on narrow, winding sections with a 50 km/h speed limit.

14 men, aged between 20 and 33, were detained for illegal racing and driving without third-party insurance. Among them were a primary school teacher, a nurse and a professional driver.

The suspects were all released on bail and asked to report to police later this month.

“The police would like to take this opportunity to strongly reprimand these drivers. These illegal racing activities not only endanger other road users, but are also a major factor behind serious accidents,” said Chief Inspector Charles Ng Hing-cheong of the New Territories North traffic unit.
