47-year-old man dies after being stabbed near hotel in Winnipeg

A man who was hospitalized in critical condition after being stabbed in Winnipeg on Thursday night has died, police said.

Officers were called to an area near the Airport Motor Inn on Ellice Boulevard around 10pm Thursday evening, where they found the 47-year-old with life-threatening injuries from a stabbing.

Police gave emergency medical attention to the man, who was in critical condition and pronounced dead, before he was taken to the hospital.

A 42-year-old man suspected in the stabbing was arrested nearby, said Winnipeg Police Service spokesman Const. Claude Chancy said at a press conference Friday morning.

At this point, investigators believe the two men knew each other, Chancy said, but offered few details about what happened.

“All we know so far is that there was an argument, a physical altercation, and the fight escalated to one person being stabbed,” he said.

Chancy said police are working to interview people who were in the area of ​​the stabbing at the time of the incident and will obtain updated information on the identities of those involved and the charges filed “in the very near future.”

Police said the homicide unit has taken over the investigation. The victim’s family is notified.

The forensic identification unit arrived at the scene early Friday and took photos of the bus stop in front of the Airport Motor Inn.

Evidence markers were placed in several spots on the ground next to what appeared to be pieces of clothing.

Officers closed Ellice Street between Berry and Marjorie streets for 10 hours after the incident.
