Seattle Mariners Share Video Showcasing the Unique Skill of Their Top Draft Pick

The Seattle Mariners are just a few months away from one of the most interesting seasons in the franchise’s recent history.

The Mariners have a core of one of the best outfielders and catchers in MLB and one of the best starting rotations in the game to match. And they’ll look to add to that core to avoid missing the postseason for the 23rd time in 24 years.

Thereupon, Seattle also has one of the best farm systems in baseball.

By the end of the season, the Mariners had eight prospects in Baseball America’s top 100, more than any other club in the game.

And none of those candidates included Mississippi State pitcher Jurrangelo Cijntje, Seattle’s top pick in the 2024 draft.

Cijntje is one of the most intriguing prospects in the history of the game. Pat Venditte was the last two legitimate pitchers (or “amphibian” if you know the reference). He was not as highly praised a prospect as Cijntje and never projected himself to be better than a savior.

Cijntje is projected as just that: a starting player of the future. However, there will be another problem in his development and recovery due to his ability to shoot with both arms.

That’s probably why he’s currently attending the Marines’ High Performance Camp.

Unlike the Arizona Fall League, which gives prospects about 30 more games in which to compete, prospects don’t actually “play” in the High Performance Camp.

The offseason program is used to help minor league players develop major league habits. The camp focuses on topics like diet, mechanics, strength development and sleep cycles, among other factors.

Cijntje, who had a 3.67 ERA in the top 16 with Mississippi State in 2024, has a good chance of starting the season with the team’s High-A affiliate, the Everett AquaSox.

But before that, the Mariners need to make sure Cijntje is mechanically sound and has developed good habits at High Performance Camp.

But even in a limited capacity, Cijntje still showcases the unique talent Mariners players share on development account “X.”

Cijntje will be one of the most interesting minor league players to watch. Not just for Seattle, but for all of MLB. And this autumn is the first step in what could be an extremely unique and interesting career for Cijntje.
