South Rupununi council calls once again for mining to be suspended due to security threats

-He criticized GGDMA

Having been a harsh critic of the miners’ union, the South Rupununi District Council (SRDC) yesterday again appealed to the government to suspend mining in the Marudi area in light of increasing security threats.

The SRDC on Monday called for a halt to mining operations following last Saturday’s grisly robbery and kidnapping suspected to have been carried out by a gang from Brazil. The incident saw the kidnapping of several people, including two Wapichan men. The kidnapped people were later released after the police chased the robbers.

In response to this statement, the Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) on Thursday, without naming the SRDC, said recent calls by a “partisan group” for the “shutdown of mining operations at Mount Marudi” were unreasonable and absurd. .
