More youth bloodshed and structured policing became the twin targets of the Kolkata Police after the RG Kar rape and murder tarnished its image in the eyes of the public.

Sources told News18 that a massive restructuring is underway to reduce miscommunication and misinformation and increase best-in-policing techniques.

Regarding young officers, sources said that, in general, deputy inspectors and inspectors are transferred to the post of deputy police commissioner when they reach a certain age, and this may cause problems in terms of public order.

Sources said that there is no denying that officers are valuable individuals in their own right, but junior IPS officers should be directly inducted at the ACP level to handle law and order in the field. The plan is to balance both young and experienced police officers so that neither the investigation nor safety is compromised.

After the RG Kar incident, the police also felt the need to strengthen their legal and cyber cells. For this, Kolkata Police is planning to assign legal matters to a senior officer at the IG or DIG level, sources said.

Similarly, an officer at the IG/DIG level will deal with cyber crimes. “We want to pay special attention to cyber crimes as it is very important in today’s scenario. The deputy commissioner will look after the nuts and bolts of each police station, but the CP-level joint officer will look after the broader policy aspects,” a senior officer told News18.

To ensure greater accountability, Thanas’ CCTVs will be linked to applications that will be installed on the phones of every officer tasked with monitoring what is happening at the police station.

For now, Kolkata Police seems to be in crisis management mode.
