Miami Dolphins Reportedly Close to Making Final Trade Deal

After the Miami Dolphins stalled at the NFL trade deadline, Head coach Mike McDaniel announced that he has had discussions with GM Chris Grier about potential deals for players being traded or acquired.

One of the players discussed in a potential trade from the Dolphins was clearly linebacker Calais Campbell, and according to SI NFL reporter Albert Breer, he was apparently close to being dealt to one of his former teams.

That team was the Baltimore Ravens, where Campbell played from 2020-22 before spending last season with the Atlanta Falcons.

“They almost brought Calais Campbell back,” Breer said on Amazon Prime before Thursday night’s game between the Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals. “This deal fell through at the last minute.”

It’s unclear what the Ravens are offering to the Dolphins, who are in a difficult situation with Campbell.

On the one hand, Campbell has been perhaps the best player in 2024 through the first eight games. This happened after he decided to sign with the team and continue his career at the age of 38 for the chance to chase the elusive Super Bowl title.

The fact that Campbell was doing so in the city where he played college football — he’s a UM graduate — was a bonus, but the championship was important to him and the Ravens would clearly present a better shot at this point.

But the Dolphins’ reluctance to sign him would make sense considering the organization’s tone after a good performance against the Buffalo Bills last Sunday — yes, even in a loss.

Trading Campbell, even doing something solid for him if this truly will be his last NFL season, would be classy, but it would also be a sign that the team has given up on the 2024 season. And they’re not about to do that with nine games remaining.

As a result, the Dolphins decided not to make a move for Campbell because having him on the roster clearly shows them they have a better chance of winning.
