Another person charged following violent protests in Peel Region – CP24

Police have charged another person following a series of recent violent demonstrations in Peel Region.

This latest arrest relates to an argument that broke out last Sunday evening outside the Hindu Sabha Temple on Gore Road in Brampton.

Peel Regional Police (PRP) said in a Nov. 9 news release that they were investigating a number of crimes that occurred at the Nov. 3 demonstration, many of which were caught on video, and included people using flags and sticks to attack others.

One of the suspects was later identified as 35-year-old Brampton resident Inderjeet Gosal. He was arrested on November 8 and charged with assault with a weapon. Gosal was later released on conditions and is scheduled to appear in Brampton court in the near future, police said.

A similar demonstration was held outside the same mandir the next day, November 4, as tensions remained high between members of the Hindu and Sikh communities following what Prime Minister Justin Trudeau described as “credible allegations” of Indian government involvement. It concerns the murder of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia last year. Ottawa also accused Indian home minister Amit Shah of targeting Sikh activists, which the Indian government vehemently denied.

“Demonstrations have become physical and aggressive as tensions between opposing sides have increased,” the PRP said in a Nov. 9 news release.

The force has since established a strategic investigation team dedicated to investigating recent “criminal incidents” at demonstrations in the region.

So far they have arrested and charged five people.

Arrest warrants were also issued for Armaan Gahlot, 24, from Kitchener, and Arpit (no surname), 22, of no fixed address, on charges of making threats to inflict death or bodily harm and conspiracy to commit assault. possession of a weapon and conspiracy to commit mischief. Police are urging them to hire a lawyer and surrender to authorities.

“We would like to remind the public that complex investigations like this take time and individuals are not arrested as they are identified and in no particular order,” police said in a statement, adding that investigators “continue to analyze hundreds of videos of the events.” “We are working to identify other suspects involved in the crime and anticipate further arrests.”
