Rock Relief partners with Greenhouse 17 to support victims of domestic violence

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Tuning guitars and doing sound checks, the bands spent the afternoon preparing to play under the lights for Rock Relief and the event Ned Bellau created to help others while doing what he loves.

“Just giving back and helping other people,” Bellau said. “Everyone needs help at some point in their life. So if there’s a way to give back, that’s my way.”

Rock Relief is partnering with Greenhouse 17, a nonprofit that helps victims of domestic violence get their lives back on track.

One thing survivor Misti Dawn knows could make a big difference.

“I speak from experience,” Dawn said. “You have to have hope.”

Dawn said that when she was in a domestic violence relationship it led her to a shameful dark place in her life. He said support makes all the difference.

“Be strong…deal with this, I’m worth it,” Dawn said. “I know there is more to life than the dark cloud I live under. I am so grateful that I was able to get out of a situation like this because I know others cannot make it.”

Dawn strives to be a voice for the voiceless, telling everyone at Rock Relief about Greenhouse 17 and how the organization is there to help people recover from domestic violence.

“Many women experience domestic violence,” she said. “Their lives are very sheltered. They have no friends, no relatives, and nowhere to go. If there is an opportunity for them to escape, because their lives depend on it. They need an organization like Greenhouse 17 that will accept them.”

The groups performing are hoping that by shining a light on community resources like Greenhouse 17, more people can help someone in need.
