I55 standoff: Driver charged after police chase tow truck wanted for Chicago murder in Channahon, Illinois

CHANNAHON, Ill. (WLS) — A driver faces charges after police He chased the wanted tow truck Illinois State Police said it happened Saturday afternoon in the southern suburbs.

ISP said troopers responded to 147th and Halsted in Harvey just before 11:30 a.m. for a report of a runaway truck.

ISP attempted to stop the truck, but the driver continued to flee.

The Posen police chief told ABC7 that the truck was passing through Posen near 147th Street and Western Avenue, and the village’s license plate reader detected that the tow truck was wanted in a homicide outside Chicago.

Officers immediately began pursuing the tow truck, but the driver did not pull over, the chief said. The driver continued up the ramp to 1-55.

Posen police officers who were following the tow truck stopped their pursuit when they saw the helicopter belonging to another police station.

The truck eventually crashed onto southbound I-55 near Bluff Road.

ISP said that there was a brief tension and two people in the truck were detained.

The Will County State’s Attorney’s Office has approved Felony Criminal Fleeing/Escape charges against the male driver, whose identity has not yet been released, ISP said Saturday.

Police on Saturday did not immediately release any charges against the second man in custody or say which homicide in Chicago the truck was wanted.

Chopper 7 was on the scene Friday in Channahon near Blodgett Road.

Chopper 7 was the subject of a major police response in the southern suburbs on Friday.

Lanes were initially closed, but just before 1.15pm traffic began flowing in both directions. At 1:30 p.m., traffic was still backed up.

ISP said there was no threat to the community and no injuries were reported.

Police did not immediately provide further information.
