Police said the woman was arrested for drunk driving, which caused the crash that led to the emergency delivery of the pregnant passenger

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – A woman has been arrested after she drove under the influence and crashed into another vehicle, causing serious injuries to a pregnant female passenger, police said.

Witnesses said they saw 28-year-old Cassandra Tokarski cross double yellow lines and run a stop sign to pass another vehicle before hitting another car at the intersection, according to authorities.

The incident took place at the intersection of East Riverside Drive and Pollack Boulevard.

They said both passengers in the other vehicle, including the pregnant passenger, were transported to the hospital.

According to the information provided by the authorities who later went to the hospital, the woman who was a passenger in the other vehicle had an emergency delivery and was told that her baby was “sick”.

They said hospital staff told them that the pregnant woman had hit the back of the front passenger seat hard during the crash, resulting in the immediate delivery of the child.

Hospital officials said the baby had to be resuscitated at birth and is currently in the NICU.

Police officers who arrived at the scene said they smelled alcohol coming from Tokarski and saw alcoholic beverages in his vehicle.

Tokarski was taken into custody after a sobriety test by police teams.

Authorities said police reviewed security footage from a nearby store and found it showed Tokarski entering the other vehicle’s lane, resulting in the crash.

Tokarski was medically cleared and sent to the Vanderburgh County Jail without bond on various charges.
