Manhunt for man accused of shooting Panhandle police chief leads to arrest in Fort Worth

A burglary suspect who authorities say shot the police chief of a Texas Panhandle city three weeks ago was arrested in Fort Worth on Friday, Oct. 25.

Seth Altman, 33, was at the Tarrant County Union Gospel Mission in the 1300 block of East Lancaster Avenue when Fort Worth police arrested him on suspicion of attempted capital murder of a peace officer around 5 p.m.

Memphis Police Chief Rex Plant was shot Oct. 3 while he and another officer were trying to arrest Altman in a burglary case, KVII-TV reported. Chief Plant went to the back door of an apartment building and the other officer went to the front door. Authorities said Altman went out the back door, shot Plant and fled.

Plant was taken to a Lubbock hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition.

Altman was last seen walking or running toward U.S. Highway 287 in Memphis.

Memphis is located in Hall County, approximately 135 miles southeast of Amarillo and 250 miles northwest of Fort Worth.
