Google appears to have reconsidered its dreaded Quick Settings change

Back in September, I reported that Google was preparing a major revamp of notifications and Quick Settings panels. Android16 this involved splitting the two panels into separate pages. One of the most controversial aspects of the revamped Quick Settings panel is that you now have to swipe down with two fingers to bring the panel down. Thankfully, Google is seemingly dropping this aspect of the Quick Settings redesign; This means Android 16 won’t need two fingers to pull down the new Quick Settings panel.

But that’s not all, I recently discovered that Google has changed the way you access the new Quick Settings panel in Android 15 QPR1 Beta 3. Note that the new Quick Settings panel is still not enabled by default, so I had to do this anyway. It takes some effort to enable this. Anyway, I noticed that I can now pull down the new Quick Settings panel by swiping down the right side of the status bar with one finger instead of two fingers. This is a very simple change that brings Google’s upcoming Quick Settings panel more in line with how other Android OEMs implement it. When I first reported Google’s plan Overhaul notifications and Quick Settings panels in Android 16People hated having to scroll down with two fingers, and for good reason. Having to use two fingers to pull down the Quick Settings panel would have made accessing the tiles a real pain, but thankfully Google seems to have eliminated that problem.

However, Google has yet to implement a way to switch between notifications and Quick Settings panels, a feature that other Android-based operating systems like Xiaomi’s have. HyperOS and OnePlus’ OxygenOS 15 I’m already offering it. I hope Google will work on this feature from now on, as I think many people will find it annoying to have to specifically swipe down one side of the screen to access the notification or Quick Settings panel.

Although I don’t know exactly when Google will launch this new design, I predict it will arrive in the coming days. Android 16 release in Q2 2025. This is because many aspects of the new design are still unfinished, such as light mode support and the various buttons available in the notification/Quick Settings drop-down menu.
