Sheriff releases identity of Dale County woman found dead in her home

DALE COUNTY, Ala. (WTVY) – The man investigators suspect of killing a Dale County woman lived nearby, but investigators say his motive is unclear.

Dale County deputies charged 29-year-old James Johnson Sunday night, about 12 hours after officers and the victim’s father found 57-year-old Sherry Clark at her home.

“He was concerned when his father didn’t show up for work Sunday morning,” Dale County Sheriff Mason Bynum said.

Bynum said the father called cops and when they broke into Clark’s home, they found his body with multiple injuries to his upper extremities.

The autopsy should provide additional information.

Johnson had moved into her neighborhood, and multiple sources say he had recently been to bed in Florida.

Court records revealed there was more than one person with the same name, and judicial authorities that could have clarified the matter were closed on Monday for Veterans Day.

Bynum said he would talk more about the crime when he addressed the media Tuesday morning.

This story has been updated to accurately reflect that the victim suffered multiple wounds but reports of the stabbing were inaccurate.
