Who Will Be Working Florida State’s Offensive Line and Wide Receivers in the Last Two Games?

The Florida State Seminoles are changing their coaching staff with two games left in their disastrous 2024 season. Over the weekend, the program made a difficult decision, asking offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Alex Atkins, wide receivers coach Ron Dugans and defensive coordinator Adam Fuller.

The Seminoles have already announced that defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Randy Shannon will assume defensive coordinator duties. But who will coach FSU’s offensive line and wideout linebackers, given that head coach Mike Norvell is the game caller on offense?

On Monday, Norvell announced his plans for both positions on the team in a well-timed BYE week. Senior offensive analyst Gabe Fertitta will handle offensive line duties, while graduate assistant Guy Lemonier Jr. will handle offensive line duties, according to the head coach. He will work with wide receivers. This appears to be a side-by-committee approach, as Norvell also mentioned senior offensive analyst Austin Tucker and director of scouting (offensive) Rick Stockstill as he went into detail about his plans.

“We’re going to work collectively as a team on that. Obviously, along with Gabe (Fertitta), he took on that role earlier in the season in Alex’s absence, so he’ll continue to be kind of a key role. “Point out there on the O-line and then get to the receiver,” Norvell said. Guy (Lemonier) will handle the day-to-day,” he said. “He works with the group, but he also works with Austin Tucker. We have a great coach in Coach Stockstill who can help us where we are lagging behind a few coaches. He will be around, involved and helpful. “I’ve had the majority of the positions, but I’ve got a great track record there too.”

“I have a lot of confidence in the coaching staff we have and what we can do over the next few weeks,” Norvell continued. “Everyone has responsibilities; it’s kind of an increased sense of importance because there might be a little bit more of a transition for the guys and make sure you connect with the players, make sure we meet them where they are and then of course we do things and go out there and do our best in the next two games.” Everything we need to do.”

Fertitta served as FSU’s offensive line coach for the first three games of the season while Atkins dealt with an NCAA-mandated suspension. He is in his third year with the program and spends most of his time coaching Atkins’ offensive line. Fertitta was at Louisville before being hired by the Seminoles and has a successful track record as a high school coach.

Lemonier Jr. committed to Florida State in 2021 and is in his fourth year with the Seminoles. During this period, he worked as a graduate assistant under Dugans. Lemonier Jr. began his coaching career at Howard in 2018.

Tucker was in Tallahassee for all five of Norvell’s seasons. He worked multiple positions during his tenure at FSU, including quarterbacks and running backs. Tucker previously worked at North Alabama.

Stockstill is an FSU Hall of Famer and the longtime head coach of Middle Tennessee State. He returned to his alma mater earlier this year as director of offensive scouting, a position that opened up after John Garrett became GM at Duke. Stockstill has a wealth of experience and has spent a lot of time around quarterbacks this year.
