The next issue our panel will discuss is whether Donald Trump should be allowed a state visit when he becomes president of the United States.

Guto Harri, who worked for Boris Johnson at Downing Street, says he has not remained silent in his criticism of Mr Trump but believes he should be given a proper welcome in Britain.

“I described it as disgusting, ridiculous and all of the above,” he says.

“However, in a democratic election where the kitchen sink was thrown at him, he was clearly the choice of the American people and emerged.

“And we welcome him as we welcome everyone else – but more importantly, we also have special bonds.”

‘Great friendship unlikely’

Alastair Campbell, Sir Tony Blair’s former communications chief, said he expected Sir Keir Starmer to also visit.

“I would be very surprised if something like this doesn’t happen in the next parliament,” he said.

But he said it was hard to imagine Sir Keir and Mr Trump having a “great friendship” – just as there was no “personal chemistry” between the president-elect and Theresa May.

“I think we need to grow up on this; Trump is president whether we like it or not,” he says.

“It’s always about him, he always needs attention, he always kind of sets the tone. And we have to put our own national interests first.”

That wraps up our coverage for tonight Policy Center with Sophy Ridge. The program returns tomorrow at 19.00.
