A man has been jailed for breaking into a charity shop and causing enough damage that it was closed to the public.

Michael Hesketh, 39, of Buckshaw Hall Close, Chorley, entered Pet’s Corner in Astley Park on October 16 by removing the door handle and breaking the door. Once inside the building, he stole items and caused a significant amount of damage. He also adopted a Gecko named Lizzie.

Hesketh cut himself with a piece of glass on his way out, and this evidence helped police identify him. It was later revealed that he sold Lizzie for £20, but Gecko has now been returned to Pet’s Corner.

He was arrested as a suspect and later charged with Theft. He pleaded guilty and was later sentenced last week (November 5) to six months in prison for the offense and a further six months consecutively for the attempted burglary of the United Reformed Church in Chorley.

PC Simon Downes, of the Southern Division, said: “Hesketh didn’t just steal items; He also stole a live animal from a place whose purpose was to bring joy to the residents.

“I am grateful that Lizzie was reunited safely and can continue to bring special memories to those who come to visit her.

“Hesketh was sent to prison for his actions. “I hope this sends a message to anyone who thinks such actions are acceptable: We will find you and bring you to justice.”

An update from Pet’s Corner stated: “We are delighted to share that Lizzie has been found and returned to us safely after three long weeks! He lost some weight, but after the veterinary check, he returned comfortably to the safe hands of the team.

“For now, Lizzie and our other animals will remain in temporary accommodation while we work to reopen safely. We remain closed.

“A huge thank you to the police for their help, to Sarah from Live Foods Leyland for generously providing live food to Lizzie, and to our wonderful community for spreading the word and sharing our posts. We couldn’t have done this without each and every one of you! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
