GQEBERHA — A teenager was sentenced to five years in prison for murder in New Brighton Magistrates’ Court. Nelson Mandela Bay.

The incident occurred on August 4, 2023, when the criminal and three of his friends, including the victim, were returning from visiting another friend.

The group of friends encountered a fifth acquaintance, at which time a shootout broke out. The victim ran away after one of them threatened him with a gun.

They then started looking for the 18-year-old boy.

The Eastern Cape National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional said: “They wanted the tik trugs they had previously purchased and which he was carrying on his escape. After finding him and demanding the item, the victim told them he was smoking.” Spokesperson Luxolo Tyali.

The situation escalated and the victim took out his knife and threatened to stab the others. Tyali said that the defendant, who was 14 years old at the time, and his friends threw stones at her, which caused the knife to fall.

One of them stabbed the victim first. The convicted boy was attacked several more times after suffering multiple stab wounds.

The group fled the scene and left the victim to die.

Tyali said the boy’s accomplice died of unrelated causes before the trial began.

“The prosecutor argued that the sentence should reflect the seriousness of the crime while considering the minor’s history,” he said.

“He noticed his disturbing behavior from the age of 12. His elderly grandmother, who was his guardian, had a hard time disciplining him. He also started using drugs at a young age, starting with dagga and progressing to cocaine.”

Küçük accepted the accusation.

Considering his age and the fact that it was his first time committing a crime, the court sentenced him to mandatory juvenile detention.

“As part of the rehabilitation order, he will be placed in Enkuselweni Security Center for seven days before being admitted to Burgerdorp Children and Youth Centre. A social worker has been assigned to monitor his movements and report on his progress,” Tyali added.
