NEW YORK (Local News) — While New York City is known for its many health initiatives, a comprehensive new study finds the city faces significant challenges in diabetes management and prevention. According to research conducted by AllClinicalTrials.com New York City, which analyzed 350 U.S. cities, shows mixed results on factors affecting diabetes care and prevention.

The study evaluated cities based on many factors, including access to healthcare, sources of physical activity and health outcomes. New York City’s data reveals both strengths and areas for improvement:

ACCESS TO HEALTH SERVICES

  • 2.67 gyms per 100,000 people
  • 4.01 endocrinologists per 100,000 people
  • 1.04 hospitals per 100,000 people
  • 3.73 pharmacies per 100,000 people

HEALTH MEASUREMENTS

  • 6.5% of adults diagnosed with diabetes
  • 18.9% obesity rate
  • 17.5% physical inactivity rate

Despite its extensive healthcare infrastructure, New York City faces unique challenges in diabetes management. The city’s dense urban environment presents both opportunities and obstacles for residents struggling with diabetes.

Nazar Hembara of AllClinicalTrials.com noted: “While New York City enjoys a robust health care system and numerous specialized medical facilities, data suggest improvements can be made in access to fitness facilities and outdoor recreation areas.”

The study highlights that successful diabetes management is strongly associated with access to both healthcare resources and physical activity opportunities. Top-performing cities, such as Highlands Ranch, Colorado (ranked #1), generally have lower rates of physical inactivity, as well as higher availability of fitness facilities and medical professionals.

COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS

For context, the study’s top-performing city is Highlands Ranch, Colorado, reporting:

  • 5.3% diabetes rate (compared to 6.5% in NYC)
  • 20.5% obesity rate (compared to 18.9% in NYC)
  • 10.2% physical inactivity rate (compared to 17.5% in NYC)

The study used 2024 data from public health records, census information and local government statistics to create a composite score for each city and provide a holistic view of whether these cities are diabetes-friendly.

Local health officials say ongoing initiatives aim to improve diabetes management resources across the five counties, with a particular focus on increasing access to physical activity spaces and specialized healthcare providers.
