After rumors began swirling that Costner could leave the series in 2023, reports quickly emerged claiming a rift between the actor and series creator Taylor Sheridan.

Deadline reported in February 2023 that the two clashed due to scheduling conflicts, claiming that after the fifth season was split into two parts, the actor did not want to film on the series in episode 2 of season 5 and the network did not want to film on the series for more than a week. He rejected the program he proposed.
