Cornell University fraternity suspended after police receive report of sexual assault

ITHACA, N.Y. (WSYR) — A fraternity at Cornell University has been suspended after Cornell Police received a report that someone was allegedly sexually assaulted and forced to take drugs in the city of Ithaca.

The victim told Cornell Police she was sexually assaulted the weekend of Oct. 25 in the 100 block of Edgemoor Lane.

Two brothers, Chi Phi and Lambda Chi Alpha, call this part of the street their home.

Ithaca Police tell NewsChannel 9 they are investigating a single report of sexual assault, the suspect and victim knew each other and there is only one suspect.

Students told NewsChannel 9 they do not want to speak publicly about the allegations against the fraternity. Still, some students said they don’t feel safe as women on and off campus in Ithaca.

Two years ago, fraternity parties were temporarily suspended following reports of sexual assault and drug use. All events during that period took place in registered fraternities.

Following the latest sexual assault report, Cornell Police are reminding students to walk in groups and alert anyone on or near campus to suspicious activity.

Ithaca District Attorney Matthew Van Houten told NewsChannel 9 he would not comment on the matter.
