New Delhi, Oct 26 (PTI) An NGO has called for legal action against OTT platforms broadcasting obscene content, arguing that such programs are disrupting the social fabric of India.

Save Culture, Save Bharat Foundation, founded by former information commissioner Uday Mahurkar, also claimed to have filed a complaint with the Mumbai Police against promoters of OTT platform ALTT for spreading explicit content.

In his statement, Mahurkar criticized OTT platforms for making obscene and harmful content accessible to viewers.

He claimed that access to sexually deviant content and pornography has emerged as a major reason behind rape cases in the country.

The Delhi-based NGO alleged that OTT platforms violate several Indian laws, including the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act, Information Technology Act, Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act and various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). .

“Left unchecked, such content undermines the social fabric of our nation by fostering an environment where harmful sexual practices are normalized. Immediate legal intervention is required to prevent further spread of this epidemic,” said Vineet Jindal, a lawyer associated with the NGO.

Mahurkar said the NGO held a public hearing last month, where more than 100 victims of sexual violence and their family members demanded removal of obscene content from all OTT platforms. PTI SKU RC
