GREECE, NY — Neighbors in Greece are still searching for answers after a long time House on Stone Road exploded Monday morning.

A family of three made it out of the house and we are awaiting an update on their condition in hospital. First responders and RG&E crews were on scene throughout the evening.

Neighbors say there was an explosion around 4:45 a.m. Firefighters say they arrived minutes after the call and the house had already collapsed. The Barnard Fire District Chief said he hasn’t seen a home with this type of damage in 15 years.

Houses don’t explode for no reason, and that reason is usually a chemical reaction or pressure change involving a highly flammable substance. However, depending on the extent of the damage, it may be difficult to find the cause.

Certified fire investigators say the first step is to document the scene. They check the location of the wreckage and the level of damage, analyze the findings, interview witnesses, and then determine a fuel source.

Firefighters say any new information will come from the Monroe County Fire Marshal’s Office. News10NBC will follow any developments. RG&E released the following statement Tuesday morning:

“RG&E is coordinating with local municipal officials investigating an explosion at a home in the town of Greece shortly after 5 a.m. on Monday. “Our teams are working with the fire department and city officials to determine the cause of the incident.”

This isn’t the first time a house has exploded in the Rochester area. About four years ago, a house exploded on Noel Drive in Gates. No one was injured, and investigators later ruled the explosion was accidental after someone in the home replaced the gas valve in the basement.

In August 2019, another house explosion occurred on Illinois Avenue in the City of Rochester. Investigators determined that the explosion was intentional. Fire officials said the man living in the house tampered with the gas service after his home was foreclosed on. He died in the explosion.
