Man shot and killed by Philadelphia police after alleged car theft, person after him identified

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Authorities have identified the man who was shot and killed by Philadelphia police officers Sunday night following a separate shooting that ended with a carjacking and pursuit.

The incident began just after 6 p.m. at a home in the 5400 block of Chancellor Street.

According to the statement of the Philadelphia police, police officers came to the scene after tension occurred between a man and a woman.

When the woman, who police believe was the suspect’s girlfriend, arrived at the scene, she reportedly told investigators the man had opened fire inside the home.

Police said the man, identified as 47-year-old Jonathan Corbin, left the house at this time.

“At some point, an officer in that area responded to that location. The male exited the residence and the officer observed the male walking toward a pickup truck, a black pickup truck,” said Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore of the Philadelphia Police Department.

Corbin walked up to the driver of a pickup truck and asked the driver to get out of the car, authorities said.

Officers allegedly confronted Corbin and fired at least one shot before fleeing the scene in a stolen pickup truck.

“This led to officers attempting to apprehend the male. There was a chase that ended here at 52nd and Woodland where the car stopped,” Vanore said.

Police said Corbin was armed when the car stopped and jumped out of the pickup.

Three officers then reportedly fired their weapons. Action News obtained video of the moments leading up to the attack.

In the video, viewers can see a crowd of people running as police cars come into view. Gunshots are then heard as the suspect exits the vehicle, turns a corner and heads towards an empty area.

“He had a firearm, I don’t know all the details of the confrontation. The firearm was still here and during the confrontation the officers opened fire,” Vanore said.

Corbin was shot multiple times, according to police. He suffered gunshot wounds to his arm, face and hip.

Corbin was transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.

It is unclear whether he was shot at the initial scene, following a police pursuit, or both.

Officials said the responding officers did not suffer any injuries in this incident. No further information has been released at this time.

Police stated that the investigation is still in its early stages.

“There is a lot of work to be done right now. We need to interview the witnesses who were there, we have videos to collect. There is a firearm here that needs to be examined,” Vanore said.

While the investigation is ongoing, officials said the three officers involved are on administrative duty.

None of them were identified, but Philadelphia police said all of the officers had been on the job for between two and 10 years.

Anyone with information about this incident should contact the police.
