Broncos assistant Mike Westhoff resigns for health reasons

Broncos assistant head coach Mike Westhoff, who played a key role in the team’s special teams success, is stepping down to monitor a possible health issue.

Westhoff had problems with his vision last week and was tested on Monday before deciding to resign.

“Making this decision wasn’t easy, but this was the wake-up call I needed to put my health first,” Westhoff, 76, said in a statement released by the team. “This team is on the right track with a strong foundation and a winning culture. I’m grateful to Sean for giving me the opportunity to contribute to a world-class organization, and I wish the Broncos the best.”

Westhoff, the former special teams coordinator for the Saints and Jets, came out of retirement to join head coach Sean Payton’s coaching staff in 2023. Under Westhoff and coordinator Ben Kotwica, the Broncos have one of the best special teams units in the league.
