Prayer vigil to end gun violence held at local Catholic high school

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Holy Family Cristo Rey High School held a prayer vigil Tuesday for an end to gun violence. Religious leaders from across the region guided students through prayer, scripture, and reflection.

Daniel McCormick is the Ministry Director of Holy Family Cristo Rey. He said gun violence affects many people in our community, including students at HFCR.

“Here at Holy Family Cristo Rey, we try to help them look forward to the future,” McCormick said.

We hold hope for what students can do for their communities and how they can become agents of change through both prayer and action.

One of Tuesday’s prayer leaders was Pastor Kelvin J. Anthony. He hopes students leave there to shine a light on the community.

“I want them to be advocates and voices for change. I would like to see them be able to go out and encourage their brothers, encourage their sisters, encourage their cousins by telling them that the way is peace and not violence, and then say the words of St. Francis of Assisi: ‘Lord, make us an instrument. peace,’” Pastor Anthony said.

The same group of religious leaders has hosted the same prayer vigil at least a dozen times across the state. They hope to keep more of them at HFCR.
