Bengal Governor Requests CM’s Report on Alleged RG Kar Rape Case Against Former Kolkata Top Cop

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has asked Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for a report on the RG Kar Hospital rape and murder case.

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has sought a report from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on the RG Kar Hospital rape and murder case following some serious allegations by prime accused Sanjay Roy.

On November 12, 2024, in his first appearance before the Sealdah Metropolitan Magistrate, Sanjay Roy (accused of raping and murdering a resident doctor at RG Kar Medical College) made shocking allegations. Roy shouted at reporters as he was being led out of the Sealdah Court and accused senior police officers, including former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, of conspiring against him.

“I tell you that it was Vineet Goyal (former Kolkata Police Commissioner) who planned the whole thing (rape and murder of resident doctor of RG Kar Medical College) and framed me. They threatened me and there were other big officers involved,” Roy alleged.

Governor’s Concern and Urgent Request for State Action

The governor’s office issued a statement urging the state government to investigate the matter and submit a report on the facts of the case. According to a statement from Raj Bhavan, Governor Bose sought clarification of the state government’s stance in response to the allegations made by Roy.

“Following the disturbing news carried by the media on November 12, 2024, regarding the alleged rape and murder of key accused Sanjay Roy against RG Kar, following the hearing in Sealdah Court on November 11, 2024, the Governor said, ‘former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Stating that there was a conspiracy against him by senior police officers, including Goyal, he called on the state government to look into the matter and inform him about the actual situation and the state government’s stance on the allegations as soon as possible. ‘ The statement includes the following expressions.

Details of the Case

The incident occurred on August 9, 2024, when the body of an assistant doctor was found in the seminar hall on the RG Kar Medical Faculty campus. An autopsy later determined that the woman was raped and then murdered. Civilian Volunteer Sanjay Roy, working with Kolkata Police, was arrested and found guilty of the crime. Charges were laid against him by the Sealdah Court on 6 February 2009, almost two months after his arrest.

This case attracted a lot of media attention, especially since Roy accused the police of a high-level conspiracy.
