TRANSNET decided to temporarily suspend its General Manager (GM) following allegations that he demanded cash payments from security companies.

Transnet Freight Rail Safety and Security General Manager Marius Bennet is accused of demanding R5 million from each of six contracted security firms (R30 million in total).

The Private Security Owners Association of SA (Tapsosa) said Bennet made his demands during a meeting and later reiterated them via social media.

The association condemned the actions, saying they undermine fair competition and transparency in the security sector.

Transnet launched an independent investigation into the allegations and confirmed that a senior security official had been suspended. The government agency assured that the investigation would be completed fairly and quickly.

Tapsosa welcomed Transnet’s response, expressing anger at the allegations but relief that action had been taken. The association’s spokesperson, Sindiswa Changuion, emphasized the seriousness of the consequences, which go beyond individual companies and threaten the integrity of the entire security sector.

“We remain outraged at the shocking allegations made against Mr Bennet but are pleased with Transnet’s rapid response, which reflects the seriousness of the allegations. The demand for cash payment placed an unfair financial burden on security companies that had already invested significant resources into their operations.

“The consequences of these demands extend beyond individual companies, threatening the integrity of the entire security sector in South Africa,” Changuion said.

Bennet was previously suspended in 2021/2022 following allegations that a patented prototype was leaked to Fidelity Security Services. The outcome of the current investigation is expected within two weeks.

This development has raised concerns about the procurement process at Transnet and the need for accountability.
